Joey Logano controlled the field from start to finish on his way to winning the Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Monday.
The Team Penske driver started from the pole and took off to lead 163 of the 203 total laps at the two-mile racetrack in Brooklyn, Michigan. After Erik Jones lost a tire and brought out a caution with three laps to go, Logano took off on the final restart to collect his second win of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.
In a race where passing proved challenging for many drivers, the 2018 MENCS Champion was able to work his way back up through the field quickly after briefly falling back in the pack. “It was nice to show the car had a lot of speed throughout the race,” said Logano, who led 50 of the first 53 laps in the race. “Qualifying on the front row and putting it on the pole is huge, that paid dividends throughout the whole race.”
Ford Performance Shows Muscle in Firekeepers Casino 400
The Firekeepers Casino 400 was a strong showing for Ford Performance at their home race. After eight Ford Mustangs qualified in the Top 10, six Ford drivers went on to finish inside the Top 10. “I’m very proud and honored to be the guy that’s bringing a (Ford) into victory lane for the first time at a racetrack that’s in their backyard,” continued Logano.
Joey Logano leads the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series points standings after collecting his 23rd career victory in the Firekeepers Casino 400. Aside from Talladega when Chase Elliott took home the checkered flag, Team Penske and Joe Gibbs Racing have won a combined 14 of the 15 races in 2019.
Stewart-Haas Racing, who won seven races by this point in the season last year, continues to fight for their first trip to victory lane in 2019.
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series takes a week off before heading to Sonoma, California for the Toyota Save Mart 350.
